Congaree National Park is a pristine bottomland hardwood forest, the largest preserved area of such a forest in the United States. Such forests were actively cut down throughout the country and since 1880, in 50 years, they were practically destroyed. In the Congaree area, trees were practically not cut down and this made it possible to keep part of the relic forest intact. The park is located in South Carolina, the nearest major city is Columbia.
