NEW RIVER GORGE NATIONAL PARK

A turbulent river flowing north through deep canyons, the New River is one of the oldest rivers on the continent.

New River Gorge National Park and Preserve offers many different trails throughout the park. Here you will find quiet forest trails, great views and historic landscapes. Accessible trails consist of marked and manicured park trails, trails within land administered by state parks, and undeveloped trails and abandoned roads.

Covering over 70,000 acres along the New River, the park is rich in cultural and natural history and offers many scenic and recreational opportunities. Trails are from 1/4 mile to 7 miles in length. Some of them can be easily connected to make longer excursions. Difficulty ranges from smooth smooth walking to steep challenging terrain. Route guidance and maps are available at Canyon Rim, Grandview, Sandstone and Thurmond Visitor Centers.

The sandy waterfall is an attraction not to be missed. It is the largest waterfall on the New River and is 1,500 feet wide. Divided by the islands, the waterfall drops from 10 to 25 feet. A mile-long disabled sidewalk crosses two bridges leading to islands and observation decks offering fantastic views of the falls and access to fishing spots. The boardwalk runs through a flat rock community on the banks of the Appalachian River, home to a rare collection of plants growing in just a few locations along several high-energy Appalachian rivers. The Flatrock community contains many plants that do not grow anywhere else in the New River Gorge.
