Built as a monument to the westward expansion of the United States, and officially dedicated to "the American people," the Arch, commonly referred to as "The Gateway to the West" is the centerpiece of Gateway Arch National Park and has become an internationally recognized symbol of St. Louis, as well as a popular tourist destination. In addition to the arch, the park also includes the Old Courthouse nearby.

The park was designated a national park in 2018 at the end of a long renovation of the visitor center and arch. It is by far the smallest national park site in the United States and an incredible structure, one of the most impressive monuments in the world.
