Indiana Dunes National Park, stretching nearly 25 miles along the scenic southern shores of Lake Michigan, the National Park protects a rich variety of ecosystems and stunning landscapes. Easily accessible from Chicago, the state's only national park is a very popular destination for its gorgeous scenery and many beautiful beaches and hiking trails.
Newly established in 2019, the park encompasses everything from huge dunes and vast wetlands to prairies, rivers and forests, with stunning views to enjoy on the lake. This unique location combines all the ecosystems that exist in the United States of America: forests, swamps and marshes, sand dunes, savannah and prairie. Numerous trails and paths for hiking trails are laid across all parts of the reserve.
Each of the climatic zones of Indiana Dunes has its own distinct flora and fauna. Sandy beaches, quicksand and dunes coexist here with green areas where lanky conifers, tundra shrubs, carnivorous plants and tall cacti grow. The park has a decent number of places for tents, family dinners in nature.
The outstanding wildlife and natural beauty of the national park is perfect for all outdoor activities. In addition to hiking, visitors can go fishing or boat trips on the lake, as well as ride horses along special routes. Description: Located in the park's western area, this trail explores wetlands, woodlands, and ends at the southern shore of Lake Michigan. It's named after Henry Cowles, a pioneering ecologist who studied plant succession in the dunes.
Great Marsh Trail:

Description: This flat, gravel trail follows the Little Calumet River through the Great Marsh, one of the largest wetlands in the region. It's a great trail for birdwatching and enjoying views of the expansive marshland.
